Understanding Correction
by: Janice Jurkovic
"Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return.
Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
So don’t bother correcting mockers;
they will only hate you.
But correct the wise,
and they will love you."
Proverbs 9:7-8
Have you ever tried to help someone who doesn’t hear? I am not speaking of someone who doesn’t not have the ability to hear, but someone who chooses not to hear, or see, or learn. A person who knows it all. A person who is wise in his own eyes. A person who hears what he wants to hear and does what he wants to do. Most of us know people like this and some of us have been this way ourselves. But scripture tells us those in this struggle will not cooperate with correction. They will fail to see their faults. They will retaliate and revile you for calling out their wrongs.
So walk away.
Do not spend your time with those who are scoffers. Do not waste your energy on those who are egotistical and arrogant. They will not learn and will not lean into the Lord. So you, spend time with the Son. Seek His face and help those He has for you to help. You do not have to have victory with all you visit. Nor do your words always have to win. If you are doing what He has designed for you to do, do it, and leave the consequences to Christ.
Moment of Worshipful Reflection:
Listen to "God I Look To You," by Bethel Music. Spend time asking God for the wisdom to know when to walk away and when to spend time in instruction and correction. Ask Him to fill you with His gentleness and Holy Spirit guidance to have His words in these instances and not your own. Ask Him to help you love your enemies and love those who insult you, even when it is hard. Let Jesus guide your actions and words, not your own pride and desire to be right.
